Management and Awareness of PTSD Caused by Racial Trauma

Program Description

The First Ladies Health Initiative has been awarded the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards, an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The program will support efforts to disseminate information on the management and awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by racial trauma beginning 2023 and ending in 2024. Previous FLHI partnership programs with PCORI are Early Access Saves Lives and Stress During COVID-19.  . Press Release The National Institute of Mental Health, a division of the National Institute of Health, defines PTSD as a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.  While these are noted causes of PTSD, economic and health inequities, as well as documented violence within these neighborhoods are major indicators for this health concern in African American and Hispanic communities, especially disparaged ones. According to Michigan State University, Department of Psychiatry, people with PTSD cannot “just get over it,” and symptoms can persist for decades if not treated.  The First Ladies Health Initiative (FLHI) will use its considerable influence involving first ladies of churches within its membership to educate congregations and others to seek help for persistent symptoms.  Specifically, the FLHI will disseminate findings of the PCORI-funded Psychological and Pharmacological Treatments for Adults with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): A Systemic Review Update and Evidence Update for Healthcare Consumers – a tool to help people make better-informed decisions about care for PTSD. The First Ladies Health Initiative is a 14-year-old 501(c)(3) NFP organization which has educated/screened 400,000+ individuals. Operating from FLHI’s hybrid headquarters in Chicago, FLHI will use social/digital, broadcast and print media, including community events and awareness seminars to deliver this crisis messaging to stakeholders encouraging better mental healthcare choices while destigmatizing the need to get help in Chicago, Los Angeles and Gary.  Management and Awareness of PTSD Caused by Racial Trauma is partially funded through a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award EADI-26910.  The views, statements, opinions presented in this program are solely the responsibility of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the views of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute® (PCORI®), its Board of Governors or Methodology Committee.  Learn More

How Does This Affect Me As An African-American or Hispanic Person?

According to Michigan State University, Department of Psychiatry: People with PTSD cannot “just get over it,” and symptoms can persist for decades if not treated. PTSD is associated with significant social, personal, and economic costs. Suicide, racial tensions, health inequities, civil rights, unbearable injustices in law and order, the wealth gap in America, its highest against African Americans continue to be a problem in our society in America and globally. Becoming aware of these situations and the public’s recognition should help to destigmatize the need to get help via Therapy and/or medicines for consistent abhorrent symptoms.

PCORI - Psychological and Pharmacological Treatments for Adults with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): A Systemic Review Update Project Summary “Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involves a group of symptoms experienced after exposure to a potentially traumatic event that may include re-experiencing the event; avoiding situations that trigger memories of the event; experiencing increased negative feelings and beliefs; and/or experiencing feelings of hyperarousal such as irritability, agitation, anger, or being on alert. PTSD is associated with significant social, personal, and economic costs. People affected by PTSD have high rates of psychiatric comorbidity; have problems with functioning (e.g., family, work, social); and tend to suffer adverse consequences such as difficulties with educational attainment, work earnings, marriage attainment, and child rearing over the life course.
